LG 600G Review

I have been using my LG 600G phone from Net10 (Tracfone also carries this model) since July 2009; it was my first actual cell phone with service, although I have had a good deal of experience with old out-of-service phones. Now that I've ordered my Samsung Epix, the LG will be going into my phone collection drawer, hopefully for good. But in tribute to it, I will write a nice review.

Let's start off by saying that this phone is terrible. (Of course, you must remember that Net10 phones are some of the cheapest phones you can buy.) I chose it for the features, but never expected it to be so poorly designed.

Features Overview

I bought this phone for its feature set. It supports Bluetooth for hands-free headsets and, more importantly for me, file transfers. It also supports custom ringtones and wallpapers, and has a camera, dual color displays, WAP browser, support for MMS (multimedia messages), caller groups, voice recorder, and more... a pretty solid feature set for a Net10 phone.

Texting

I can multitap quite fast, thanks to the experience I've had with peoples' old phones since I was 8. I actually prefer multitap over T9 (or other predictive text methods) thanks to my typing speed. However, the LG 600G was horrendously disappointing. If you are even considering purchasing this phone for texting: don't do it!

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but an animation is worth a thousand pictures. The first one is more or less how I can type on most multitap phones. The second one is my LG 600G.

The three main issues with texting on the LG 600G, as can be seen in the above animation, are: the horrendous lag, the lack of an indicator for the active letter (no black rectangle), and the lack of a "skip letter" function. In other words, not only does the phone lag while pressing keys, but it also requires you to wait a full 2 seconds if you want to type two letters from the same key (such as "no" and "kk").

User Interface

In light of the above texting animation, the user interface is equally laggy. Menus are designed quite well, but the lag finds its way into every corner, including the menu, photo gallery, camera, and browser.

Bluetooth

The LG 600G is one of the few Tracfone/Net10 phones that allows file transfers over Bluetooth. Backgrounds, ringtones, and applications can be copied to and from the phone, either to another phone or to a computer. (Note that none of the stock backgrounds, ringtones, and apps are transferrable or deletable.)

Camera

The LG 600G's camera is nothing special, and I didn't expect much from it. It does include a brightness adjustment, CCD quality settings (Super Fine, Fine, Normal), multi-shot mode, self-timer, white balance adjustment, color effects (Normal, Sepia, Mono, Negative), and your choice of 3 shutter tones.

Calling

Calling works well about half the time. I can usually hear people well, and the speakerphone functionality helps if I can't hear them for some reason. However, I often run into a problem where I can hear the caller just fine but they cannot hear me at all. It happens randomly.

Cellular Connection

Tracfone/Net10 is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). This means that they do not own any cell towers, but rather lease time from other companies. The majority of Tracfone handsets are GSM, and thus use either AT&T or T-Mobile, while CDMA (Verizon) models are offered in locations that do not have GSM coverage. Mine was assigned a T-Mobile SIM card, effectively making me appear as a T-Mobile customer.

The phone gets a signal in most places, but one issue I've run into was that it would pick up the stronger AT&T signal but would not register on the network (due to the roaming agreement in the area). Most phones include a "Network selection" feature to combat this, but my LG 600G does not have it, although the online Tracfone manual mentions this setting.

Web browser

The browser is a standard Obigo WAP browser, with limited CSS support (background colors and small images are supported). When I first bought the phone, I was only allowed to access Net10's site, which offered downloadable graphics, ringtones, and games. However, Net10 has since unrestricted the mobile web and allows access to nearly any site.

Ringtones

The LG 600G supports MIDI (polyphonic) and AMR (real music) ringtones, which can be purchased via the browser or transferred via Bluetooth or MMS. MIDI ringtones sound fairly good in terms of quality, but AMR tones sound clipped and distorted (this is due to the low quality nature of the AMR format). You can also record your voice and use that as a ringtone. It does not support MP3 ringtones, and even if it did, its scant 4MB of storage would barely hold one song.

Random lockups

Occasionally, I will receive an incoming call but will be unable to answer. Opening the phone does nothing, and no keys respond. The only way to correct this is to remove and replace the battery (which, of course, drops the call).

This sometimes happens on its own, in a different form: I will pull the phone out of my pocket and it will prompt for my security code, but the keypad will be completely unresponsive.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the LG 600G boasts a great feautre set for a cheap ($40) Net10 phone, but performs terribly. Maybe I just got a lemon, but the texting lag seems to be a widespread problem. Should you buy one? I don't recommend it, as Net10 now offers better models.

Wow, how did you put up with that phone for so long?
I swear, it would have ended up in a lake if it had been mine, haha.

there was a one day only deal on the net in April..somebody offered that phone for $19 with net10. After putting in the disount codes provided with the ad, the cost of the phone and accessories was $16, free shipping via fedex included.
Now, for $16, there's not much to complain about. the phone is exactly as described above, with more glitches than contentment.
Net10 service, and customer service leaves too much to be desired...the phone model accepts third party apps, which i loaded via bluetooth and my pc, but net10 didn't vibe with the opera mini browser i installed.
with customer service outsourced, anywhere from south america to the south pacific, english is not the native tongue, and tech support suffers from lack of product knowledge.
to their credit, they sent three different replacement phones for the glitches with the former; only to find the replacement had its own set of problems..the worst being one sent with sim card rejected. so much for quality control.

@steve Yeah, I saw those ads for a $19 LG 600G, and I laughed because I guess they're trying to get rid of this poor-quality model.

I do like the fact that the phone supported 3rd-party apps... but I could not get Gmail to work, and I didn't bother with Opera Mini.

Tracfone/Net10 handsets are ridiculously locked down. You can't transfer SIMs between phones, and I guess they've locked down part of the networking stack, which explains why some applications don't work I suppose.

I have this phone and you're right on about the application and texting lag, but for a guy like me who uses a phone very infrequently it works fine. I haven't experienced the network or dropped call issues described above and can check my g-mail account with it (though I haven't much reason to). I think it's a good phone for my very limited phone needs and aversion to cellular phone contracts.

@steve anderson I'm not sure if you read my review or not. I did state exactly why/how the phone performed poorly.

I have this phone. It's very basic but suits me just fine. Has great reception and paying $15 a month for a reliable service with Net10 is wonderful :)

I just recently purchased this phone from Big Lots. It was their only phone that didn't have a "Refurbished" label. Bought for $35 with 300 free minutes. Has some nice features, but this is only used as an emergency phone. Should work well. Wal-mart in my area has seemed to part with any of the cheaper phones with minutes included.

I too finally tired of all these glitches and bought the $20 LG420g as a bridge phone until something really good appears. Meanwhile anyone here have any clues on how to transfer contacts. Bluetooth connects, windows finds phone code for the 6oog, but pairing fails after phone asks for PIN code.

update: In case anyone stumbles across this review for this crappy discontinued LG600g phone- my 600 is now paired with PC, but doesn't allow me to send contacts to desktop, from which I'd like to import them to LG420g.

@wordworker Try this:
1. Copy LG 600G contacts to SIM
2. Install this SIM into the 420G
3. Copy contacts from old SIM to 420G.

Note that you will NOT be able to actually use the phone with the old SIM. Net10/Tracfone have really locked these down. I'm not sure if the SIM-swap method will even work...

If you have a Bluetooth adapter with a Broadcom chipset, you can likely explore contacts via My Bluetooth Places (or My Computer > LG 600G > Contacts).

A third option: pair the 600G and 420G, and send the contacts directly from one phone to the other via Bluetooth.

Wish I'd gotten your message a bit sooner. I should have realized you were following this.

I was going to try doing what you suggested (transfer from old sim) but was worried the old SIM might cause a problem. So I gave up and ported the number to the new phone, resigned to enter the contacts by hand, and that evidently made the old sim invalid. Tried it anyway, but no go.

Explored BT before posting but PC says problem with BT adapter. How can it have paired up if problem with adapter? I tried sending just one number via BT from 600 but that gave me an error message too.

The 600 is probably not fully functional now but it was good of you to try to help.

@wordworker Actually, the SIM's non-functionality would be due to the lockdown.

Did you try sending directly from the 600G to the 420G? As in, pairing the two devices without pairing either with the computer?

And the Bluetooth adapter problem has to do with your computer only. Try reinstalling the drivers.

OK I have the two phones paired. The 420 BT display shows me the 600 (with a lock symbol!) and lists three file folders: sound, images, others. I was able to get the ring tone from sound. But the other file doesn't quite seem to want to load all the way. It got 2/3 through a bar graph and then gave me a disconnected message.

At $15.00 per month you can not go wrong with Net 10. Been having a rough time downloading contacts to the computer but can download one picture at a time using bluetooth with the LG600G. If anyone has a solution would like to know. The program DataPilot 7 does not even communicate with NET10, TRACKPHONE, ETC. Phones. It is advertised to download files from any cellphone.

@Thain Dikkers I have successfully used the program Medieval Bluetooth OBEX File Transfer to browse files on my LG 600G and send them. Only issue is, you will need to sit with the phone in your hand pushing "OK OK OK OK OK" repeatedly (do it while watching a movie or something and it's not such a big deal) -- there might be a setting somewhere to fix it but it's been way too long since I even saw my 600G :P

I'm on my 2nd LG600g phone. The first one kept dropping calls and some other issues. Now having problems with the replacement. I get a voicemail icon but when I check for messages I'm told "You have no messages". Also my messages left for others is described as "garbled". Minutes are even deducted to set up voicemail!!! Have run into so many issues with Net 10 and this phone I'm so ready to find another provider!!!!
